God is generous and He calls His people to be as well. What we do with what God has given us, shows the world who and what we love, and helps proclaim the gospel. We want to glorify God with every area of our lives, and that includes what we do with our finances.
Does the church really need my money?
A local church is just like any club or civic organization - it has expenses and depends on its members to help cover those expenses. These organizations will charge “dues” - a church does no such thing, but still depends upon the financial contributions of its members.
Isn’t tithing an Old Testament concept?
While tithing (10% of income) was introduced in the Old Testament (Malachi 3:10), operating expenses are a reality in any time, as we noted above. More importantly, though, Jesus challenged His followers to not just focus on doing, or not doing, a particular thing, but on the heart attitude behind it. So, we need to pay attention to the Apostle Paul’s words (I Corinthians 9:7) when he says, “the Lord loves a cheerful giver.”
So, what are the things that should motivate me to give?
It is a great privilege as a follower of Christ to share the Good News of His Gospel with anyone that we can, across our street or around the world. We can participate in this great privilege with our finances. Highland Park has prioritized missions and participates in cooperative giving with other Southern Baptist churches, as well as local ministry in the Hanahan/Greater Charleston area. In any case, we dedicate our finances to being obedient to the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20), “...to make disciples of all nations…”
So what now?
First, and most importantly, pray. Ask the Lord to show you a plan of giving for the year ahead and to lay on your heart a need in which you (and your family) can participate financially.
Second, attend our monthly church business meetings and learn how the ministries of Highland Park are carried out, both on our campus and “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
